W02 - Choosing A Business Reflection

Wow, the week just flew by. Last weekend I spent a considerable amount of time on my classwork, as I did today. Pretty much my whole day was spent finishing coursework. I guess that's what happens when you are doing school full-time as well as working 10-hour days consistently. This is my last semester, and I guess I've really got to focus on making the most of it!

The case that was explained this week was interesting. I liked that it continued on from week 1 and that we are getting to see the full story start to pan out. It was interesting to learn about how it's possible to start with a business plan first, and then decide what product you want to fit into that plan. However, the opposite also works, in that you have a product and work to fit a viable business plan around it. I liked learning about that, and it's really opening my eyes to the opportunities that are out there.

The spreadsheet template that we have available is also pretty interesting. It gives a very organized approach to analyzing ideas and seeing how viable they actually would be using Adwords. I think a lot of people wouldn't realize this and just start up a business and hope it sticks. Backing up the start-up of business with Adwords research makes sense, as there is a ton of data available. Learning how to analyze and use it in a meaningful way is the skill I look forward to learning about in this course.

Ranking, Link Building & Google Analytics

In this class, we worked on building webpages and creating our own business. The second half also focused on the backend of websites, enabling Google Ads and utilizing Google Analytics. There are so many pieces of data that Google collects and provides for analysis. I'm just amazed at the amount of information that exists. It would be, and probably is, a full-time job for someone to go through a company's data from Google and to make recommendations from that. In learning about links, I found it is also important to gain links to your site. These links show that others out there find your site as trustworthy. Perhaps you have worked to establish yourself as an authority, and more links help to establish that authority. Analyze This!

So this week, we worked on Google Analytics. Coming in from barely any experience with this side of Google, I had originally thought that Analytics and Ads were about the same thing, just different features. However, they are different and Analytics offers a huge array of data on linked websites. This data that is collected can be used to analyze all sorts of things, from the location of the browser, time spent on each page, where they came from beforehand, and if there were any conversions made during their session. It also can show your ads that are sending people your way. From a data perspective, Analytics provides huge amounts of information that I can use to mold my ads, fine tune my webpage, and better serve my target market. Doing this effectively should help increase the success of my website.

Site Builder & Hosting

This week was a good one to learn about site builders and hosting. I hadn't really identified the differences between the two and thought they were one and the same. However, from the coursework this week, I was able to learn there was a difference between the two. It was explained in a video earlier about how the host is like the land a house is built on. That helped me to visualize what a host is really there for. It's interesting how many different combinations are out there for hosts and site builders. That is why it looks like there are many different websites dedicated to reviewing, helping set-up, and other aspects of both hosting and site builders. It's interesting that hosts give out coupons for advertising, and maybe that's because it's a two-way street helping their clients drive traffic to their sites.
